Barn Conversion, Abson, South Gloucestershire
Located on the outskirts of Bath, the barn is a grade II listed Building. The design philosophy was to maintain the openness of the barn which often can be lost with the introduction of new partitions for sub-division.
Part of the scheme was to design a steel and timber helical staircase to be manufactured and installed by a specilaist contractor. The stairacase acts as sculputural feature within the two storey atria, whilst the glass guardings preserve the openess of space and maintain views towards the expansive countryside surrounding the property.
In this vein the two storey barn was designed as a living space with two sleeping galleries above formed with glass partitions and linked by an atria and glazed galleries. Both new bedrooms have en-suite facilities afforded by purpose designed wet-room pods which continue the theme of openess throughout.
The barn was designed to be state of the art in mechanical and electrical terms using energy saving features, such as a ground source heat pump and heat recovering ventilation, whilst the electrical installation is a wireless automated system controlling lighting, heating and home entertainment systems.
