Chilkwell Street, Glastonbury
We were appointed by a private developer to design a 60 Bed Care Home and Social Housing Scheme on a large factory site on the outskirts of Glastonbury. The project required close co-ordination with the anticapated end service providers to ensure the design firstly, met their individual requirements and secondly, the stringent space and specification requirements for new build Care Homes and Social Housing.
The existing site slopes sharply away from Chilkwell Street and thus is challenging in the design of a Care Facility that requires large, level floor plates; this issue was overcome by cutting into the slope, which resulted in the building being two storey at street level and four storey further into the site.
The site is located within a Conservation Area and thus the design needed to respect the existing context of Chilkwell Street. In this vein the appearance of the building responds closely to the existing Architecture at street level, whilst a more subtle contemporary approach is utilised further into the site, echoing the current industial usage.
The site is loacted within close proximity of Glastonbury Tor, which meant the Planning Authoritiy was extremley concerned with the proposed roofscape of such a large building. This was addressed by breaking down the overall mass of the proposal into a series of separate roofscapes, divided by sedum flat roofed areas.
