Dapps Hill, Keynsham
This project involved a two storey gabled side extension linked to the existing property by a fully glazed single-storey link.
The existing small cottage is attached to the end of a Grade 2 listed terrace in the heart of the Dapps Hill Conservation Area; although the cottage is not listed itself, the planning authority was of the view that any alteration or extension would have an impact upon the setting of the listed terrace.
The visual impact on the existing historic terrace was reduced by separating the new two storey extension from the cottage by a light, single-storey, glass link that contains the new staircase.
The simple gabled form of the main extension is visually referenced to the original buildings by the use of matching stone to the external walls and window surrounds that also echo the existing.
The lightness of the staircase link is achieved by the use of glass for the walls and roof.
The success of this project is the way that we have been able to adapt and extend a relatively modest cottage to the needs of a growing family and at the same time have minimal impact on the Conservation Area - most pleasingly bourne out by the good reception the project has received from is neighbours.
