New House, Redland, Bristol
We were commissioned by a private client to design a new 3 bedroom house in the back plot of a large Victorian villa in the conservation area of Redland. The building's impact upon the character of the conservation area was of particular concern, therefore the building is constructed directly onto the existing rubble wall fronting the Street.
The plan is staggered and single storey behind the existing wall to reduce the mass of the building, as seen from the public realm.
The design is envisaged as a traditional coach house to appear subservient to the grandeur of the villa, whilst the use of traditional materials, echoing the appearance of the surrounding area sit the building quietly in its context. The interior of the scheme in comparison is cool and contemporary.
